I'm trying to get an idea of how good cell coverage is at some of the most popular outdoor spots in the US.  Particularly the Grand Canyon, Appalachian trail, Rocky Mountains, Yellowstone, Yosemite, Sierra Nevada, etc... but also interested in any other spots you hike/climb.  Please respond to this thread and give your feedback on your stomping grounds.

I was at the Grand Canyon Dec. 2012, and you can't rely on cell coverage there.  You can get a signal sometimes in the part of the park around buildings, and I even had Wi-Fi at one of the buildings.  However, there was little or no signal everywhere else.  And, you can't find a good signal outside the park either... there are national forests around the Grand Canyon, and Navajo land as well.  I think they just don't put cell towers on much of that area.  The closest I could get a consistent signal was Flagstaff, though I do remember being able to have a conversation on hwy 89 about 20-30 miles north of Flagstaff.

I had a Galaxy S3 (CDMA).

Michael,

Thanks for the response, this helps.

No problem.  I might add that I was at the South Rim... the North Rim is closed in the winter.  The day I arrived (12/25/12) at the eastern entrance, the road to the main part of the South Rim was closed due to snow.  So, depending on what time of year you go, you will need to prepare differently for weather.  I uploaded a pic from 12/27/13 at one of the campground areas.  There is less snow when you hike into the canyon.
