I found that I could hike for HOURS after taking up running. I think any activity that you enjoy, that increases your HR while doing it will help. Also stairs, lots of stairs. Ignore the lift, take the stairs.
Also, I recommend reading Steve Houses book " Training for the New Alpine Climbing".
Yes that is a great book. I agree running is a very beneficial activity as long as you can avoid developing any chronic issues in the knees and hips.
