Event Description

Mt. St. Helens is a great introduction to mountaineering and a great way to get in shape for the rest of the season. The 2009 climb was a great success, we had good weather, everyone made it to the top, and all got back safe. It's a mothers day weekend tradition for males and females to wear dresses (optional) while climbing (over your other clothes). This is a long day climb with almost 5000ft of elevation gain and a good climb to do if your thinking of larger mountains like Mt. Rainier. It takes most people 5-8hrs to climb to the crater rim and back.  FitClimb cannot guide and is not accountable for safety, just helping facilitate meeting up.  Members should contact each other to link up.  For more info see the article on climbing Mt. St. Helens.

We decided not to go due to the avalanch danger being as high as it was.  Ended up back country skiing at Mt. Rainier! Maybe next year for St. Helens!

I would make sure you have chains to drive to MarbleMount and a shovel.  Pack snowshoes, check the latest avalanche forecast, follow safe avalanche practices, and/or consider postponing.  I was planning on taking my 1 year old but going to skip out this year.  Here's the latest report from NPS.

  • Forest Road 83 is open to Marble Mountain Sno-Park. Road and parking area are not plowed. There is 4 to 6 inches of new snow. Single lane from Cougar Sno-Park to Marbel Mountain. A 4x4 and traction devices are recommeded.  Please drive and park cautiously.
  • Forest Road 830 to Climbers Bivouac is closed. Forest Road 81 is gated at the Cougar Sno-Park.
  • Due to a fire there is no longer a shelter at Marble Mountain Sno-Park.
  • Significant Avalanche Danger Thursday through Sunday. Climbers should expect full winter conditions on Mount St. Helens. Snow depth at Marble Mountain Snow Park is approximately 3-4 feet. At timberline, snow depth is 9 to 13 feet. Above timberline snow depth is variable due to wind blown conditions. Rapidly changing temperatures may result in highly variable snow conditions, and ice. Snowshoes with cleats or skis with climbing skins are currently recommended to climb Mount St. Helens. It is also recommended that climbers have, and know how to use an ice axe and crampons. Climbers should be prepared for extreme weather and rapidly changing conditions. Please update yourself with the latest avalanche and weather forcasts. Check Here for Weather  and Avalanche conditions
  • The Worm Flows Climbing Route, from Marble Mountain Snow Park, is the most direct route to the summit of Mount St. Helens during the winter. Use the Swift Ski Trail, #244 to reach timberline. Cross to the west side of Swift Creek, just above Chocolate Falls (elev. 3,700’). Follow ridges and open slopes to the crater rim. Wooden route marking posts guide climbers from timberline to approximately 4,800’ elevation. To reduce your exposure to avalanche potential, avoid cornices, snow loaded slopes and gully bottoms.

Would love to here from some experienced people on the possibility of a Mt. St. Helens summit on mother's day or the day before.  I was planning to climb Saturday the 7th, but don't think it is looking very good.  Please help!

Thank you, Randy

Just wanted to check in with the folks that are committed to the climb.  I'm a maybe and was wondering with the road being closed due to snow exactly where the starting point would be and if you're all planning on a one day trip?  Would love some feed back.  Thank you.  Sheryl
